LIAM

When I first encountered Liam, he was deeply engaged with his therapist, focused intently on practicing his emerging skills. I took a moment to observe his unique personality, knowing that genuine interactions with him would blossom naturally in time.

For many parents, the opportunity to have their sensory-sensitive child photographed is very exciting and emotional. They often send in something unique—special clothing or a cherished item meant to make the session more meaningful—hoping to capture a moment that might never be replicated. Liam’s mom had sent in a special hat that she believed would add a personal touch to his portraits. Though his initial interaction with the hat was tentative, there was no rush. I believe in giving children the reins, allowing them to decide when they are ready to shine.

I always set aside my entire schedule for the day, ensuring that every minute was free, unhurried, and filled with opportunities to connect with these little souls on their own terms. My first attempt with Liam yielded only a few images of him in the hat, but it was evident that he wasn’t quite ready for that much attention. Respecting his pace, I returned later, after lunch.  That afternoon, a transformation unfolded. I stepped back into Liam’s room and found him in a state of pure bliss—wrapped up in his favorite blankie, his eyes twinkling with mischief. His smile was radiant, his laughter infectious. When a child feels in control of their surroundings, their inner joy unfurls like a blossoming flower, and Liam was a perfect example of that magic.

His creative session evolved into something truly magical. The blanket, the absence of a few teeth, and the contagious laughter all wove together to form an authentic portrait of his spirit. In that moment, everything felt right—Liam was not just posing for a photo; he was celebrating his own individuality and the comfort of a safe space where he held the power.

By the end of the day, every snapshot told a story: a story of trust, patience, and the remarkable beauty of a child’s unguarded joy. With Liam, the magic was in his spontaneity—the gentle push and pull between being directed and simply being himself. The images I captured that day were more than just photographs; they were windows into a genuine moment of bliss, a celebration of a child who, despite any challenges, radiates warmth, humor, and a contagious zest for life.
